This tutorial tells how you can use Netscape Composer to put your web page on the Web. The process of moving a web page from your computer to a web server where everyone can see it is usually called uploading. Netscape Composer calls this process 'publishing' and has made it fairly easy to do.

First open up the Netscape Composer program, and from the 'file' menu, click on 'open page'.

You will now be at the 'open page' window. Next, click on the 'choose file' button.

After clicking 'choose file', Windows users will see this screen. You can use this window to browse to the location of your web page file. After you find it, click on it, then click 'open'.

You will now be back to the 'open page' window. You will notice that the path and name of your file is now displayed in the blank. Click the 'open' button.

Your web page will now be open in the Composer window. (Don't worry if it does not look quite right, Composer may place some reference markers around some items.) Now you are ready to put the page onto the Web. Before the next step, make sure that your computer is connected to the Internet.

To upload the web page, click on 'file' then click 'publish'.

The publish screen has several lines for you to fill in. For 'Page Title' you can type whatever you want. For 'HTML filename', you put the name of the file that you are uploading. This filename should end with the extension .htm or .html, and should contain no spaces. It is also recommended that your filenames be in all lowercase letters.

The 'HTTP or FTP location' is where you type the server name that you are uploading to. If you have personal web page space with Spydernet, fill in this line exactly as it appears in the example above. Do not forget to include the forward-slash at the end, your upload will not work without it.

The username and password lines are where you type your Spydernet username and password.

The 'Other files to include' section is where you can select additional web documents and images that you would like to upload. For example, if you have your picture on your webpage, you will need to send the picture file along with the .html file so that it will appear correctly for anyone who visits your page on the Web.

After all of the required information has been entered, click 'ok'. Netscape Composer will connect to your web site and start uploading your webpage there. The uploading process may take some time, depending on how much data you are sending, and the speed of your Internet connection. The page should now be online and ready to go!
